Research Philosophy
Dr. Declercq's research integrates mathematical analysis, computational modeling, and experimental investigation to advance the understanding of wave propagation in engineering systems. His work seeks to bridge fundamental science and engineering applications while creating lasting capacity for research, education, and international collaboration.
International Recognition
Throughout his career, Professor Nico F. Declercq has received international recognition for contributions to ultrasonics, acoustics, and engineering wave propagation. His work has been honored through major scientific awards, invited lectures, editorial leadership, and appointments by scientific organizations across Europe, North America, and Asia.
The photograph below shows Professor Declercq receiving the International Dennis Gabor Award during the official award ceremony held in the Hungarian Parliament, Budapest, Hungary. The award recognizes internationally distinguished contributions to science and engineering and commemorates Nobel Laureate Dennis Gabor, inventor of holography.
Among other international distinctions are the International Commission for Acoustics (ICA) Early Career Award for outstanding contributions to ultrasonics, appointment as Professor Honoris Causa at the University of Allahabad (India), the Best Paper Award at the International Congress on Acoustics (Montreal), and recognition as a World Technology Award Finalist in the Materials category.
These distinctions reflect sustained international recognition by the scientific community and complement a career dedicated to research, education, mentorship, and international scientific leadership.

Prof. Dr Dr H. C. Oswald J. Leroy
Inspired by compelling examples given by Oswald Leroy during a course on Mathematical Physics while Declercq was still a BS student at KULAK, later the choice was made to pursue a PhD with Leroy. The picture shows Prof Leroy, with Nico Declercq and his youngest son Lambert, on the occasion of 2015 ICU in Metz, for which Declercq served as President, during a ceremony where Prof Leroy has received a token of appreciation for his long career in Acousto-Optics and Ultrasonics.
Distinguished Prof. Dr Mack A. Breazeale
During his PhD research, Nico Declercq got in touch with Mack Breazeale and his wife, Louise Scott. Mack was an old friend of Declercq's advisor Oswald Leroy and had an excellent lab at NCPA in Oxford, MS. Soon, Mack took responsibility for introducing Declercq into the world of experimental physics and nonlinear acoustics and became a de-facto co-advisor of his PhD research. Declercq has stayed several times in Oxford with the amicable Breazeale family. Thanks to them and their warm American attitude and hospitality, he decided to seek a faculty position in the USA. The picture was taken in 2009 when Mack was already ill. He passed away not long after; it shows Mack, Lou and Declercq's two eldest children, Anna-Laura and Benjamin.
